Dutch translation is incomplete and incorrect, but didn't expect this to show up

I’ve just installed 5.3-RC1 and the first things I noticed was the new layout and the Dutch Translation that was automatically activated, while I didn’t have it before.

I’ll have to get used to the layout, so I’ll report it if I see issues.

The translation needs more work. At the moment I tend to switch back to English.

Some parts are not translated at all (like Recent Comments, Cache control, Site monitoring on the overview page), but I just realize that these are extensions.

Some translations are very literal and I have to translate it back to English to understand what it means. :wink:

Hopefully someone of the Dutch polyglots team can help improve this. (@jeroenrotty ?)

How are these translations created? I can hardly imagine that it was human made.

Even the name of the plugin was changed: “MainWP Dashboard” → “WP Freshboard”

If it wasn’t created or checked by a real person, you should not include it in the plugin.

I must admit I haven’t checked but WP Freshboard as a MainWP Dashboard - that seems awful. If it isn’t translated by someone within the WP Community, I agree it’s better to remove them.

Hi @josklever and @jeroenrotty ,

We used DeepL for automated translations. We are aware that those are not as good as real human-made translations are, but this is just something we wanted to use as a help for users that have real trouble with English.

The idea is to continue working on maintaining these translations and get them better.

As we get feedback on translations, we will update them.

The conclusion for now is that DeepL failed in this attempt. In my opinion it’s better to remove these Dutch translations and it can be further translated by humans on Projects translated to Dutch < GlotPress | WordPress.org

I wish DeepL would do a better job. For now, we decided to keep the translation with the hope that if anyone decides to do real translation, this would be a good head start. I think it would be easier to tweak this AI-generated translation instead of starting from scratch.

The plugin has already been translated for a big part via the link above. Of course the new version will introduce new strings, but I’m certain that the available translation is better than the DeepL version, so please remove it and let the Dutch translation team handle the new strings.

Hi Jos, thanks for the additional clarification. Somehow I missed your note that the Dutch team handles the Dutch translation. Translation files are now removed.
